Week 1 Photo Maniacs

‘’To create and explore with no intention, yet capturing the hint of creation through camera lens and not your senses’
The idea of this first semester is to explore variations of techniques which can help us generate ideas, shapes, story and designs for Fashion garments. Week 1 is all about exploring and understanding the use of photography; and to learn the theory that
’what you see with your eyes could be distorted though the lens of your camera’.

When I say field trip, what would be the first thing that comes to mind? For me, it was ‘Excitment', but oh my days; field trip 1, though it was very interesting and inspiring to explore London from a different perspective (through a camera lens), wandering around Woolwich pier is not a good idea during a windy Monday morning. I almost got blown into the river!

Woolwich- Tin Man Installation- Really like the random
positioning of each Model . Especially where this installation
was found- Woolich of all places?

Locations of this trip – Woolwich, London Bridge, Tate Modern-Gabriel Orozco exhibition, Millennium Bridge, St Pauls, Shoreditch

Along Millenium bridge during Mid-day. Camera light distortion creating this illusional sunset scene
From this picture- i am starting to understand that different setting on your camera can not only change the outcome of the image, but can also hide and enhance details within.

From all images taken during the week, I have compiled a collection of the pictures which I thought were the most successful in telling a story. I then rearranged the photos to see if any other sparks would light up

Wall 1: Amalgamation of the Linear and the Circular forms

After intense and critical selection from a mere 400 photos.
I have chosen the above images because of the
composition, story and patterns shown.

View of Wall 1 from a different angle

Wall 2 :
Black & White rib bikes on their side ! abstract or what?

Wall 3 : Colour in order of shape

The theme? Not sure yet but looking through my pictures, it seems I have a thing for repetition, view restriction and also reflection. The photos below are the few images which i found most sucessful from this trip. What do you think?

Find this image really intersting due to the layering and depth of the subject. I have especially format this picture to Black & White to help ehance the difference in textures and details of the Doll Vs the Reflected Landscape

Again, this is an image with a reflection amongst another reflection. I really like the contrast of colouring this has,
and a little thing like this may not even be noticed when just seen with the human eye.

When I originally started this trip, I simply took images of what i found interesting- and even took pictures just for the sake of taking it (hence why i ebded up taking 400 photos). I later started taking pictures under influence of abstract angles and positioning, thus giving me the 2 images above. I really like the structural and crisp edges the bikes create, and i especially enjoy how a simple recognised object can be distored through the placement of the image. I think the image shows great perspective and can be manipulated in many ways to create a new form.

From the discovery of this exercise, i am starting to see a style in my work, but i feel more is needed to be experimented in this area.

Field Trip 2 - Aim:
  • Be more critical when taking photos but dont close all possible doors
  • Start collecting objects which i find interesting
